During the week beginning March 9th until March 13th, WSPA trainer Alistair Findlay travelled from the UK to RAK to train our stray animal catching staff how to correctly catch dogs and cats, humanely and with the least amount of stress possible.
This was the third year that WSPA has come to RAK AWC to provide training. Alistair was very impressed with the improvement of the catching skills of the guys in the stray animal teams. They showed exceptional skills in perseverance, planning, team work and communicating with people in the community. At the end of the week they received advanced certification from WSPA due to their excellent catching skills.
During the training week the team went to Shamal, to the landfill in Al Jazeera, to Khuzam, Kharran, Al Dhaid, Nakheel, Al Ghail and an area near Khor Port. In all places they were successful in catching the animals. Overall 103 cats and dogs went through our TNR programs this week.
It was great to not only see their catching skills in action, but also to see them develop their animal welfare instincts. Having spotted a Doberman in appalling conditions, skinny, haunted by flies and going blind they approached the owner to get his approval to take her to see the vet. They succeeded in their endeavor and found that the dog was temporarily in the hands of a caretaker until the family permanently moved to their new home in RAK. The owner was horrified at the state that the dog was in after having been left for less than a week. As the family was still not in a position to keep the dog with them they immediately booked her in to board at RAK AWC until they had moved.
All in all it was a very successful week! We can be truly proud of our Stray Animal Teams. They are kind to the animals and friendly to all of the people that they encounter during their days and very good at their job in general. WSPA have been soimpressed with RAK AWC that they are going use RAK AWC as a case study to demonstrate to other countries what can be achieved with determination, hard work and a supportive government.
