4 reasons why you should spay/neuter your Pet
4 reasons why you should spay/neuter your Pet
- Prevent Pet Overpopulation
Every year, thousands of homeless animals enter shelters in the UAE, while many others roam the street. More than half of these are put to sleep or euthanized because shelters are overcrowded and pets cannot be placed in homes. The offspring of your pet can end up in these shelters. Spay/ neutering reduces the number of unwanted pets and pet deaths.
- Your Pet’s Health
Spayed/Neutered pets live longer than their unaltered counterparts. Generally male neutered dogs live 18% longer than un-neutered male dogs and spayed female dogs live 23% longer than un-spayed female dogs. The reason for the reduced lifespan in un-altered pets is attributed to their increased urge to roam which exposes them to fights with other animals and road traffic accidents. The increased longevity of altered pets is due to reduced risk of developing cancers of the reproductive system and pyometra (fatal uterine infection).
- Preventing Bad Behavior
Un-neutered dogs are more prone to urine marking than neutered dogs. Although this is often associated with male dogs, female dogs can do it too. Spaying or neutering your dog will reducing urine marking and may stop it altogether. In cats spraying is a big problem especially with intact cats and the simplest solution is to get them spayed or neutered early before the problem even starts. Neutering solves 90% of urine marking in pets. Neutering also reduces howling, roaming and fighting and aggressive behaviors.
- Cutting your Costs
If your female pet has a liter, you have to find homes for the offspring and pay to feed them. Spaying is the best way to make sure you do not have to deal with unwanted litters. Caring for a dog with a reproductive system cancer or pyometra can cost you thousands of dirhams -five to ten times as much as a routine spay surgery. Additionally unaltered pets are more prone to fighting which can incur high veterinary bills.
