TRAP NEUTER AND RELEASE
WHAT IS TRAP NEUTER AND RELEASE?
Trap Neuter Release (TNR) is the humane, non-lethal method of population control for outdoor cats and dogs that is more effective than the traditional method of trap and kill. Staff of the RAK Animal Welfare Centre, trained by WSPA, ASPCA, and Fear Free Shelter, humanely trap stray cats and dogs. The animals are brought to our clinic at the shelter for spay and neuter surgery and vaccinations. After they recover from the surgery, we return cats to where they were caught. We only desex healthy cats, as we consider it cruel to put back an unhealthy cat in the overcrowded streets, where all the animals have to fight for territory and food. Dogs, in general, we keep them all in the center and they go through our adoption program.
All cats who have been spayed or neutered through the RAK Animal Welfare Centre’s TNR program can be recognized by the tip of the left ear, which has been surgically removed and cauterized during their spay or neuter surgery. This is not harmful to the cat and allows our trappers in the field to identify if the animal has already participated in our TNR program.
You may see our traps, which are clearly marked with our logo and contact number around your local community. Please do not approach or move the traps, we will take care to bring the trap as soon as possible to the shelter once a cat is inside.
WHY TRAP, NEUTER AND RELEASE?
TNR is the most humane and most effective way of controlling outdoor cats populations
When cats are removed from an area, other outdoor or stray cats move in to take advantage of the food source, so removing outdoor cats only temporarily solves the problem and it doesn't solve the main issue
TNR has been used with success across the US and all over the world
TNR prevents unwanted cats from being born, relinquished, and euthanized
A vaccinated, sterilized colony of outdoor cats poses no rabies threat to humans and will deter other outdoor cats from moving into the area.
TRAP NEUTER AND RELEASE RESULTS
Healthy and well-cared for, but gradually diminishing cat colonies
An immediate reduction in complaints about behaviors associated with unsterilized cats, including spraying, fighting, roaming, and breeding
Fewer rodents in your neighborhood
HOW CAN YOU HELP US?
You can assist us by keeping a watchful eye on the overall health of the cats in your neighborhood and reporting any concerns to us. You can also give us information on where to trap cats for our TNR program or bring in stray cats yourself to the shelter for TNR with the fee of 100 AED which will be a big help to us. You can collect a cat trap at RAK AWC (100 dhs deposit is required). Please ensure you fill in the stray form when you bring an animal in, it is of vital importance that we know where to return the cat - they can only be released in the same location where they were caught.
Our stray animal team and TNR program are also helped with the establishment of cat cafés. For more information visit our CAT CAFE PROGRAM page.
